Winery Herdade Dos Lagos
HERDADE DOS LAGOS (Lakes Estate) is a captivating agricultural enterprise founded over thirty years ago by Horst Zeppenfeld, a native of Bremen, Germany, with the ambitious dream of establishing a business in the south of Portugal, in the ALENTEJO region. Based in MERTOLA, the estate spans 1,000 hectares of land, including five lakes, a flock of approximately 1,000 sheep, and olive and carob trees. However, the primary activity is viticulture and the production of excellent wines typical of the demarcated ALENTEJO region.
What makes HERDADE DOS LAGOS unique is its total commitment to sustainability. The company is certified as Organic and Vegan, meaning that no animal-derived substances are used during the winemaking process. Additionally, the estate is completely self-sufficient in terms of water and energy, thanks to state-of-the-art photovoltaic systems and five artificial lakes, all coupled with optimal irrigation management for the vineyards. This eco-friendly approach is particularly relevant in the ALENTEJO region, characterized by scorching summer climates and low precipitation.
Some staff members live permanently on the estate, while others reside nearby, ensuring in-depth knowledge and protection of the territory. Leading the company is Helena Manuel, an agricultural engineer, while Marta Pereira and Carsten Heynemeier are the winemakers responsible for wine production.
In the 25 hectares dedicated to vineyards, grape varieties such as TOURIGA NACIONAL, SYRAH, ARAGONEZ, ALICANTE BOUSCHET, ALVARINHO, and ARINTO are cultivated on schist soil. The resulting wines reflect the richness and diversity of the region, with aromatic, fresh, and harmonious white and rosé wines, as well as reds with great structure and robustness, all distinguished by an elegant sensory smoothness and intense ruby color.
In conclusion, HERDADE DOS LAGOS embodies the significant characteristics of a grand wine region like ALENTEJO, offering high-quality and sustainable products shaped by careful land stewardship and the expertise of its competent team.
